Back at it again!

Around September of last year, I ran full steam into a season of life that many of us have. This season involved my wife becoming pregnant (due in June 2013!), cramming classes to finish my Master’s degree, and entering a 6 month studying session to prepare for and take the CPA exams. I can truly say that this was one of the most trying seasons of my life, and having taken the last CPA exam 3 days ago, a season that has come to an end.

I want to write this post to share a few important updates on this blog, my lifestyle, my business, and my education. All of these work hand-in-hand in what success looks like for me, and can hopefully help you on your journey.

The Sum of Business Blog

This blog is the relaunch of my original work with some exciting new directions. It was never the intent to leave this blog during this season, but I underestimated the intensity of study and the sheer amount of material covered by the CPA exams. This left me little time with my family throughout the week, let alone a free hour or two to write a blog post. All that aside, I have an additional 50 hours of time back into my schedule and am really excited for the next chapter of The Sum of Business!

As I have spoken to previously, lifestyle is very important to me. By lifestyle, I mean defining the life you want outside of the work that you do. For me, my goal has been to work 10 to 20 hours a week to support myself and my family, and spend the rest of my time building into my family, building into my friends and others in my life, and building into my community through various non-profits, ministries, and other organizations. Obtaining my Master’s degree and the CPA certification has been an important step toward that goal. With this lifestyle in mind, I took this last 6 months of my life and worked and studied harder than I ever wanted or desire to do again. But it served to help me achieve an important goal that will now free me to achieve the lifestyle I truly desire.

My Business – Crossroads Accounting

My business and this blog are the two arms of my working life. With my business, I have quickly built a solid client base who I support with a wide variety of services including bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax, income tax returns, website design and hosting, and business consulting. I have moved a lot further in the direction of business consulting because I find such enjoyment in helping my clients build and manage solid business models and systems to grow their businesses. It is really exciting work for me and helps my clients at the same time. I am looking to grow this aspect of The Sum of Business to include many of the concepts that I share with my clients and to stimulate my own growth and research in this area. So overall, business is going well and I am happy to be back on the blog to pursue the other half of this business!

My Education

Since I wrote last, I have gone through a period of growth and education that has been nothing short of grueling. I studied an average of 6-8 hours a day on top of working and have had no life outside of that. But, as Winston Churchill once said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” I knew that this step was critical to my business goals and that I wanted it done sooner than later as my wife is due with our 3rd child in less than a month (June 2013) and my 4 year old daughter is beginning to realize that when I am studying, I am not with her. That and I wanted to enjoy my first “summer break” since high school.

All that said, I have assimilated an enormous amount of information that I can take and use to help my clients and you in a variety of different areas. Much of the information I have learned will work itself out in blog posts to come and I hope to make as much of that information useful and applicable to you in your business as I can.

Wrapping Up

With this new season opening up, I am again seeing the fruit of the quote at the top of this page “a man’s reach should exceed his grasp.” Continue striving forward in your business and your life to reach what others say is unattainable. For me, people have told me that a simple lifestyle and working less than 20 hours a week simply wasn’t realistic. I am going to make that happen and will show you how to do so as well. So stay tuned for more posts and updates in the coming weeks and months. If you have any subjects or questions you would like to hear more about, feel free to connect with me and let me know.

Keep Reaching!
