Marketing – Plugins For WordPress

Last week I encouraged you in building your website by getting some basic content set up in order to have something to bring people to. Before going out and looking for traffic and engaging in social media, I would recommend adding some useful plugins for WordPress your site to help you manage your website, track visits, and link to search engines and social sites. These are plugins I currently use, and is certainly not an exhaustive list as I am always on the lookout for new plugins to support my site. The remarks in quotations below are from the descriptions by the creators of the plugins. To install these or other plugins on your WordPress site, do the following:

Login to your Dashboard -> select Plugins -> Add New -> search for the plugin -> Install Now -> Activate Plugin

Website Management

StatPress - “Real time stats for your WordPress blog.” Great plugin to help you track how many visitors, page views, spiders, and feeds you have on a daily and monthly basis to help you track your efforts for social connections or advertising campaigns. You can also see what search keywords people used and which search engine or social media network they clicked through to get to your site.

MailChimp - “The MailChimp plugin allows you to quickly and easily add a signup form for your MailChimp list.” I use MailChimp to keep track of my subscribers and use this plugin to help people sign up in an easy way on the sidebar. I would recommend using the plugin for your subscriber program, but certainly ensure that you have a way for people to sign up to receive information and follow you by email.

Configurable Tag Cloud – “A tag cloud plugin for WordPress to give you more flexibility with the styling of your tag cloud.” The basic cloud tag is ok in WordPress, but this plugin gives you some more to play with to customize the cloud tag to your liking.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

WordPress SEO by Yoast - “The first true all-in-one SEO solution for WordPress, including on-page content analysis, XML sitemaps and much more.” This plugin is the “all-in-one” package for SEO that sets you up across the board to be set up for search engines and even social media searches through Facebook and Twitter. The main functionality I use on a daily basis with this plugin is setting up the focus keyword, SEO title, and meta description for each page and post on your website.

SEO Smart Links - ”provides automatic SEO benefits for your site in addition to custom keyword lists, nofollow and much more.” Smart Links allows you to set up words and phrases to be linked automatically to categories, tags, posts, or pages on your site. This sets up natural interlinking and strength to your site.

Social Sharing Toolkit - “This plugin enables sharing of your content via popular social networks and can also convert Twitter names and hashtags to links.” This plugin allows you to put sharing links on each post so people can link to your posts and follow links on your website to help people connect with you on the various social media networks.

Social Slider - “This plugin adds links to your social networking sites’ profiles in a box floating at the left side of the screen.” Enough said, just providing options for your visitors to connect with you and your website content.

Old Post Spinner - plugin to repost older content to the top of your WordPress site.

Tweet Old Post - plugin that will allow you to select older posts to tweet on whatever schedule you want to set up.

AntiVirus - “Security solution as a smart, effectively plugin to protect your blog against exploits and spam injections.” You can use this plugin to scan your blog and make sure everything checks out.

Online Backup for WordPress - “Online Backup for WordPress can automatically backup your WordPress database and filesystem…” This plugin will send a backup of your site to your email address on a schedule you set up, or you can download it to your computer. This could prove invaluable if your site gets taken out by a virus or just a glitch in the server.

BulletProof Security - “protects your website against XSS, RFI, CRLF, CSRF, Base64, Code Injection and SQL Injection hacking attempts.” I am still working through all of the functionality of this plugin because it is so extensive, but I have really enjoyed what I have seen so far and would definitely recommend it to round out your site’s security.

Wrapping up…

I have a few more plugins on my site, but nothing worth mentioning here. Also, if you have any suggestions for me and my site, please feel free to contact me and let me know and I will give it a go!
