The Beginning of The Sum of Business Blog

Here I am on the edge of the precipice. I have been here many times before, but have always found a reason to turn back, a reason to delay the inevitable. Well, today I step out, today I reach out beyond what I have grasped, beyond what I know in my head and into what I know in my heart. As Robert Browning so aptly put it in his work “Andrea del Sarto”:

Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp,
Or what’s a heaven for?

And here I reach out, I step off this cliff that I have so often come up against to reach for my dream, to reach for the passion that burns in my heart and to stop at nothing to reach it. Yes, I may crash and burn, and probably will a few times, but it is a step in faith. My faith is in my God, and He has shown me a vision ever since I was a young boy of reaching out to Him, stepping out in faith to Him, off the cliff. As I fell through the air, the rocks racing toward me, I felt Him lift me up as in Isaiah 40:30-31 (NIV):

Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

And He lifted me up and brought me to a new place, to see the world through different eyes, to trust Him emphatically, and to live from the burning desire that He has placed in my heart.

That might be a strange way to begin a blog called “The Sum of Business,” but I am beginning this blog at the beginning of my journey; a journey I look forward to walking with each of you. You see, I have known for a few years now that though I am a “doer” or “task-oriented” or whatever label you want to throw on my personality, but I am not passionate about just doing whatever my mind thinks up to do. My real passion lies in “doing” with, for, and alongside other people. I am the most passionate when I am working with people and helping them achieve their dreams.

So that is what this blog is about – stirring that burning in my heart, reaching for more than I grasp, stepping out on a journey to help people, to help you reach your dreams.

More practically, I want to come alongside the many people I have met, some of whom I call friends, who have struck out as entrepreneurs and started businesses doing what they love. Unfortunately, most everyone I meet who has stepped out to start a business where they do what they love has soon been met the cold, hard realities of managing their business and, more simply, managing their cash. These people are gifted and talented in so many ways, but in managing their business and the bottom line, they just try to keep that monster in the closet.

So what do I have to bring to the table? Part of the blessing and the curse of how I’m built is that I see the big picture and the details, and my mind analyzes and searches out the patterns and systems that bring it all together. I am an Accountant by trade and I couldn’t have found a skill-set that comes more naturally to me. I see the beginning, end, and everything in between, and love observing and interacting with the multitude of variables and situations that small business owners find themselves in. And the best part about it is that all I get to do is help people manage their businesses and their cash!

The disconnect in the real world is that no one who has gone through the fire of obtaining the skills and qualifications necessary to be competent in this line of work is willing to come alongside those who need this help the most unless the money follows shortly thereafter. So many people are on their own in a sea of taxes, regulations, accounting software, bank statements, and IRS letters. For those of you who are seeking your dreams, trying to keep that monster in the closet, and just want to make ends meet, I would like to invite you to walk this road with me.

In the coming days, weeks, months, and, Lord willing, years, my desire is to build on this humble piece of internet real estate a place where people can come and learn, grow, work together, ask questions, seek answers, and get the support they need to reach their dreams. I see a place where people come to find answers, get equipped, and get excited about continuing on the journey they started. Most of all, I want to help you keep your dream alive – the dream you had when you started this whole thing – when you took that first job, when you sold something you made with your own hands – the dream that you have felt slipping away each time the frustrations of the details of the business came up.

Keep Reaching,

Mark
